About Our Project

Welcome to Autistic on the Range … where everything’s a range: gender, sexuality, politics, autism, ability, beliefs. We’re gonna talk about it, live in it, love on it.

I have always wanted a farm which you can read about why on my about me page (hotlink)

When I started researching farm blogs and websites I came across two predominant themes. I found far right conservative fundamental Christians, and I found granola crunching antivaxxers. I didn’t find anyone that seemed to be like me and my family. I have this really cool husband backing me in all these things I want to take on, so I’m going to switch to “we” here because I know I speak for both he and myself going forward.

We may not seem like you and your family either, and that’s okay. This won’t serve everyone. The amazing thing about the internet is that if it doesn’t work for you, you can click out of it and find something that does.

I wanted a farm that would provide sustenance for my family and give me the opportunity to consider and provide community care.

I have a lot of plans for this project. Some may come to fruition and some may not. I just want to give you an idea of what it is I am planning to do.

Object one is to find and obtain a farm in a good spot in Nova Scotia. This is easy to say, hard to do. We are blessed to have family willing to support us with the actual purchase of a property. This is a privilege and a gift that we don’t take lightly, and look forward to a day where we can pay it forward.

We need to come up with financing to pay for our inspections, land transfer tax, property tax, legal fees, and moving costs. That is why this project is starting where it is, to give us the opportunity to garner community support to take this massive leap across the country. This will eventually lead to us starting a patreon, a gofundme, and other potentially sponsorships if we find they align with our values. Hopefully we will be able to make fun sharable content to bring attention to what we’re trying to do and you’ll come along with us on this great adventure. If you have cash you don’t need and would like to share it in our direction we would certainly appreciate it, thank you in advance.

There’s excitement afoot as we have found a job for Shawn that will facilitate a transfer into NS in the coming months. Fingers crossed this all aligns to work well.

Speaking to the actual project we’re examining (at last). Yes, I ramble, it is part of my charm.

I want what they call a “boutique farm” this allows us to exist outside the very expensive quota system. Quota regulates beef/chicken/turkey/pork/cow milk/chicken eggs, etc. This seems like it would eliminate most farming, and it might, but it doesn’t eliminate what it is I’m hoping to do. I want a sheep farm. With our annual crop of meat lambs, in future this is what will offer the bulk of financial sustainability for the farm. In addition I plan to bring a big supply of runner ducks, for both eggs and meat.

Under quota there is an allowance for personal/familial use. This lets us raise cows/turkeys/chickens/pigs, basically anything as long as it is for household use. I am very excited about what this can do for us and what it can let me share with you; milk, butter, cheese, soap, sour cream. We’re going to make things!! We’re going to hop into the kitchen and cook things together. We’re going to garden in various forms and can and look forward to how to sustain ourselves and share with our community.

Sheep also offer us fleeces which means an array of uses for wool and the fun things associated with that.

Nova Scotia also has a wide variety of hunting, fishing, coastal foraging and unique ways to stay happy, healthy and fed. We look forward to sharing all these opportunities with you as well, as well as licensing processes and natural resource advisement that ensures generations to come can do what we’re doing.

We also want to share with you this awesome place we’re living, the sights and places that are very unique to Nova Scotia. This province is rich in history and opportunity, and I am sad to see it having a hard time keeping up with the world. It is very under-represented on social media and needs to be shown off. We are fleeing Ontario to be able to afford the life we have dreamed of. Let us show you why it is so wonderful.

Eventually we want to build some cabins on the property. We want to facilitate other people doing what we want to do. It has been hard for us to make this jump because we lack an address in NS. It is really hard for finding jobs, finding housing, qualifying for rentals and mortgages, transferring licenses, etc without an address. Hopefully we can eventually make this step easier for other adventurous humans by offering low cost housing that will give them a local address so they too can pursue their dreams.

All in all we’re going to have a fun and social space that leans heavily left. We do not tolerate cruelty and bullying, we encourage questions and curiosity. Whether that be applicable to the place or to us, we will always endeavour to answer earnest questions. Who knows, maybe we have a future politician in our midst, that would certainly add another layer to this adventure.

We’re excited you’ve decided to join our journey.

Quin Poxleitner.
